Abstract

The correlation between human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and p53 tumor suppressor gene mutation in the progression of cervical cancer was elucidated. Forty-three out of 64 cases (67.2%) were HPV positive. HPV type 16 was positive in 8 cases and 18 was positive in 13 cases, and 22 cases were positive for both HPV type 16 and 18. HPV type 31 or 33 was not detected in our experiment. The detection rate of HPV depending on the pathology was 27.2% (3 of 11 cases) in cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), 86.9% (20 of 23 cases) in carcinoma in situ (CIS), and 66.7% (20 of 30 cases) in invasive cancer, respectively. On SSCP analysis, mobility shifts were observed in 11 cases (7 in HPV positive cases; 4 in HPV negative cases). Our results showed that HPV infection and p53 tumor suppressor gene mutation are not exclusive in cervical carcinogenesis.
